Building with the best in AI and design
SEO is the work of ranking pages in classic search results. AEO is the work of getting cited inside answer-focused experiences like Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, and voice search. SEO is about being a link a buyer clicks. AEO is about being the answer a buyer reads before they click anything.
| Dimension | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Search Engine Optimization. The work of getting pages to rank in classic blue-link search results. | Answer Engine Optimization. The work of getting cited in answer-focused experiences like AI Overviews, featured snippets, and voice. |
| Where you appear | Google and Bing organic results. Image and video search where relevant. | Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, voice answers, and people-also-ask boxes. |
| How you rank | Keyword targeting, content depth, internal linking, technical health, backlink authority. | Direct, extractable answers. Schema markup. Entity recognition. Structured Q&A and HowTo content. |
| Content style | Comprehensive long-form pages targeting a primary keyword and related terms. | Definitional intros, structured Q&A blocks, HowTo lists, comparison tables, self-contained passages. |
| Schema used | Article, Product, BreadcrumbList. Schema helps but is not the primary lever. | FAQPage, HowTo, Speakable, Person, Organization, LocalBusiness. Schema is a core lever. |
| Time to first results | Typically 90 days for noticeable ranking movement, 4 to 6 months for real revenue lift. | Featured snippets and AI Overview lift often shows up in 30 to 90 days once content is restructured. |
| Best for | Buyers who type a query, scan results, and click a link to read more. | Buyers who want a direct answer right now (zero-click) and any voice or AI Overview surface. |
SEO is the discipline of getting pages to rank in classic search engines. It started in the late 1990s and has changed with every Google update since. The fundamentals have held up: crawlable site, good information architecture, content that matches search intent, technical health, and trust signals from inbound links.
SEO is still the largest channel for most B2B and consumer sites. It is also the foundation everything else stacks on. Without it, your content is invisible to the answer engines that decide who to cite.
AEO is the discipline of getting cited in answer-focused experiences. Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, voice search, and the growing share of zero-click results all fall under AEO.
AEO is younger but the levers are concrete. Restructure content around buyer questions, add schema, build entity authority, and your existing pages start getting pulled into answer surfaces. Read the full primer in What is AEO?
The honest answer is both, but in order. SEO first if your site is not yet crawlable, indexable, and trusted by Google. AEO immediately after on the same pages you just optimized for SEO.
If your SEO is already strong and you are losing share to AI Overviews or featured snippets, AEO is where the marginal dollar wins. Restructure the 20 to 50 highest-traffic pages, add the schema, and watch the answer surface citations come in over the next 30 to 90 days.
If your category is dominated by zero-click queries (definitions, comparisons, how-to, local intent), AEO becomes more important than SEO fast. The buyer never sees the blue links anymore.
If your buyers research in ChatGPT and Perplexity, AEO is necessary but not sufficient. You also need GEO, which is a related but distinct discipline. See AXI Search for the three-discipline approach.
A crawlable, fast, well-linked site that Google can index and trust. Without this, nothing downstream works.
Restructure existing pages around buyer questions. Lead with definitional answers. Add FAQ blocks, HowTo content, and schema.
Ship new pages built for both layers at once. Definitional intros, structured Q&A, internal linking, schema, entity signals.
No. AEO sits on top of SEO. If Google cannot crawl, index, and trust your page in the first place, no answer surface will cite it. Strong SEO is the foundation AEO builds on. The two work together, and the right strategy almost always invests in both.
AXI Search runs AEO, GEO, and SEO on one monthly subscription. Content, schema, restructuring, and reporting in a single plan.
